THE UNEXPECTED BLESSING
It seems to me that God does His best work when we are least expecting it. In the Bible we see countless times when God’s blessings snuck up on people and took them by surprise.
- I’m thinking of Abraham and Sarah having a child
- Joseph getting summoned from prison by Pharaoh
- Moses getting swooped up out of the river by Pharaoh’s daughter
- Hannah receiving her child
- David getting a call to come appear before Samuel
- Elisha being chosen by Elijah
- The widow at Zarephath having her food stores resupplied
- The disciples being chosen by Jesus one day
- The widow who got her deceased son back
The list could go on. All of these stories show us a God who is more than willing to surprise us with unexpected blessings.
I think He prefers it that way. Why? For two reasons…
First, so we don’t mess it up!
And second, so we can’t take credit for it.
It reminds me of these scriptures:
Romans 4:4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt.
Romans 9:16 So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Not long ago we had a service on Wednesday when, quite unexpectedly, I felt prompted to tell everyone in attendance to expect some unexpected blessings from God. We even took time to pray and ask God to begin releasing those blessings immediately.
The next day, a couple that was present that night texted me. They submitted an invoice for work they had done for a general contractor for $6,000. This was a blessing in itself for this family because work had been slow.
But what happened next was the unexpected blessing!
The general contractor said no to the invoice. He was not going to pay them $6,000. Instead, he was going to pay them $12,000!
A double portion – unexpected blessing!
I claim that for you, too! For your family and for your future! Join me in believing in this season that God will pour out special, unexpected blessings on His children.
Deuteronomy 28:1-2: Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God.
