Living a Deep Life
Going deep in life means a lot of things to a lot of people. But one thing is for certain, the deeper we go, the better our lives become.
Paul said in I Corinthians 6:19-20, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Going deep in Paul’s mind could be summed up in these three simple statements from the above scripture:
1. A Deep Life Begins with Understanding Your Value - “For you were bought at a price…”
Until you can begin to comprehend how much you mean to God, you will never go deep. People who do not value themselves are never willing to pay the price for self-improvement. To them, spending time and energy on bettering themselves is not worth it. However, God would disagree! The value of something is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it. God thought you were so valuable, that he traded His Son’s life for yours. Don’t you think it’s time to start seeing yourself they way God sees you?
2. A Deep Life is Fueled by Love and Gratitude – “…therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Something has to motivate you to go deeper. The greatest and most powerful driving force in the world is love. Love drives people to do many wonderful and not-so-wonderful things. When you truly understand the price that was paid to redeem you and how God loves you, your love for Him will fuel your passion to go deeper. Any use of self-discipline and even duty will pale in comparison to the motivating power of love to cause you to desire a deeper life.
3. A Deep Life is Expressed by being Aware of God’s Presence - “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God…”
Living deep comes from the belief that God lives in you and wants to work through you. Being aware of His abiding presence and learning to discern His voice among the clamor of the world is key to going deeper with Him. We need to be aware of His presence more than just when we are reading our Bibles, saying specific prayers, worshipping at church and listening to sermons. We need to be aware of God presence when we go to work, to school, the grocery, to our favorite coffee shop or even if we are mowing the lawn, visiting with friend sitting at a desk at work, etc. When we learn to recognize His presence in these places, we will learn how beautiful and practical a relationship with God can be!
